The Story
Rfissa is deeply tied to Moroccan family life — it is the dish most associated with postpartum care, prepared by mothers and grandmothers for women who have just given birth. The fenugreek is believed to support recovery and milk production, though rfissa has long since transcended that role to become a wintertime favourite. The process of tearing msemen into the broth gives the dish its distinctive texture, somewhere between a pasta dish and a thick stew.
✓Healthy Swaps & Tips
- • Use whole-wheat flatbread instead of traditional msemen for more fibre.
- • Reduce msemen to 2 pieces and increase lentils to 200g for a higher protein-to-carb ratio.

Common Questions
What does fenugreek taste like?
Slightly bitter and nutty, with a maple-like aroma. It mellows significantly when cooked slowly in broth. Use it sparingly if you are trying it for the first time.
Can I skip the msemen?
Yes. Serve the chicken and lentil broth over cooked rice or quinoa for a simpler version.
